What Makes A

Happy Classroom?

What Makes a Happy Classroom?

The pursuit of happiness is one of humanity’s most enduring riddles, alongside inquiries such as ‘what is the purpose of life’ and ‘is there a higher power guiding the universe? We believe that no single framework can fully answer these complex questions.

We are offering a relational framework to explore the nature of happiness, inviting a broader, global dialogue among educators. Through this inquiry we aim to illuminate the many ways in which we perceive happiness and the tools to find it. How can we be happy? What do happy learning spaces look like?

Connection to the Inner Child

Verve is our capacity to be, express and enjoy our authentic selves within our communities and with all our senses. It is a position of power in that it takes courage to stand out within our spaces of belonging and live authentic lives.

Empowerment is our ability to look out for our own good and find strength in knowing that we have the power to determine and influence our own path on our own terms. It is a position of power because of its emphasis on authorship and ownership.

Connection to a Wider Perspective

Tranquility is our capacity to look for the good outside of ourselves and our immediate predicament, giving us respite through a feeling of awe that comes from a connection to things greater than ourselves. It is a position of peace, in that grounding to a broader perspective can allow for enhanced mindfulness and calm regardless of the situations we are in.

Belonging signals our ability and privilege to share space and find comfort and safety in communion through our connection to others. It is a position of peace because, while communities may wield collective power, they have the capacity, first and foremost, to amplify our sense of safety and security across physical, social, and emotional dimensions.

The Happy Classrooms Initiative

Mission Statement

The mission of the Happy Classrooms Initiative is to explore and expand on the concept of happy classrooms worldwide. We do this through global research initiatives and through our support to educators. This support includes offering stipends for experiences that promote a positive learning environment and an increased understanding of the building blocks of happiness for both students and educators. We deeply value the partnership of other educators as co-creators on the journey toward discovering how happy learning environments are built and nurtured. Our relational happiness framework focuses on four interrelated ideas: Belonging, Empowerment, Tranquility, and Verve.
